Janakpur is more commonly Janakpurdham, is a city in Nepal which is situated in Tarai and 300m. from sea level. Janakpurdham is the administrative headquarters of the Dhanusa District of the Janakpur Zone and has a population of approximately 85,000. The city is located about 400 km south-east of Kathmandu valley, 20 km from the Indian border at 26 42′ 44″ N, 085 55′ 18″ E Janakpurdham has a major tourists industry due to its significance in the Hindu religion.

In Janakpur, around Janaki temple, there is more flow of Indian tourists than the Nepalese themselves. The number of Nepalese visiting to Janaki temple is one hundred thousand whereas the number of Indians visiting is approximately five hundred thousand. The temple is situated right in the middle of Janakpur bazaar. The temple looks similar to that of the palace itself. Inside the temple, there are many sculptures and images of gods and goddesses such as: Guru Vashistha, Sadananda, Sunayna, Ram, Laxman, Bharat, Shatrughan, Sita, Janak and so on. The temple Tikamgadh was built by an Indian queen Bhanu Brish Kumari in 1968 B.S.
